DC++ is a direct connection network that enable the students to get materials that they can’t simply get from internet, e.g fyp report, lab reports and project examples from the seniors. These are things that can only be access from personal archives, not from Google. Yes, of course DC++ provide easy access on pirated entertainment, but it just a tool of distribution, not simply create one. Downloading directly from the internet would be almost the same concept, except DC++ make the process easier. It is the best alternative medium for entertainment since direct connection bandwith to the WAN is not fully maximized.DC++ also acts as one of main tool of communication and alert system to the students where notice from e-elearning are copied and paste as well news from outside source. Furthermore, to blame DC++ is the main distributing medium to pornographic materials are wrong since there are operators and administrators of the hub that filter the traffic of these kind of material. Thus, these are the proves that students are much reliable with DC++.
DC++ is a important portal for IMPORTANT announcement such as looking for someone, lost of items, any new news for student. I cant see any other portal that can work as fast as DC++ and allowing any information to be spreaded widely and fast. Even announcement for classes can be carried out by DC++. And also announcement for any driver who forgot to shut their light. This is community were are prolonged about.
DC++ is actually a portal where we share NOT ONLY entertainment but also knowledge and opinion. Porn is not a problem since we do have DC operators who controlling the server and the content also the people who using it. If you did realize, ever since DC++ is vanished from V5, most of the students went out try to find their own entertainment which will lead to lots of problems which in the end will relate to UTP. Plus, with DC++ gone, it does not mean that number of student failing will decrease. It is much easier to control the situation where 1 person downloading from outside and others download from him/her rather than every one start to download from outside on their own.
Why do we actually need DC++? Let see.
Of course it is not only for entertainment. At this moment of time, I do need DC++ for source of information. We are getting close to final exam. So, for those who are too lazy to walked to IRC, DC++ is the best source for past year paper!!!
I believe for DC++ so far have already play a vital role in UTP student’s life. It’s all really depend on how we utilize it. Cyberlaw is not an issue here. Even if we don’t have DC++ in village 5, students can still download all sort of things that are claimed against the cyberlaw from the net. All this time, student depends to DC++ that much for materials such as softwares, reports or project examples that are being shared by seniors through the DC++ client. ITMS can’t expect students to download everything from the internet as not everything can be obtained by simply googling it. Besides, I believe, not so long before the network box is off, students are hardly download anything from the internet as every site that are from downloads categories are being blocked, so how can ITMS expects student to get their materials from the net? Lucky for us, all this time, we have DC++ where students can share their works with each other. I believe DC++ is not to be blamed, as it for sure depends on how we utilize the facilities. If we used it for bad purposes, then bad outcomes it will be and vice versa. Announcements, notices and all that sort of things spread effectively when DC++ are around. I have to say that DC++ admin and operators are putting great efforts to make sure that notices or announcements reach all the DC++ users by sending a hub mass message. As an alternative for utpchat.net, DC++ also had already become a medium for students to change their ideas, thoughts and whatsoever with each others. We can’t expect students to work like robots, they are human and they also need fun. That is where DC++ play its role. DC++ provides entertainment for those who desires it. My last word, depends on how we utilize this facility, it can be either good or bad, it’s up to students to decide it.

dc++ is really important to UTP students as it has many function for UTP students. First of all, by having dc++ UTP students can get the software installer easily. instead of searching via the internet, the students can search for the installer via dc++. this helps to boost the efficiency of the student as well as saving the students’ time so that they can have more time to carry out other task.
secondly dc++ also serve as the entertainment for UTP students esspecially international students. By having dc++ all the videos and song are available. the people can just download new movies from dc++ and do not need to waste time and money traveling to ipoh for the newly released movie. apart from that, dc++ also share other educational videos like how to do programming and etc. these educational videos can help the students to learn better as study had proven that visual and audio teaching material functions better than any other hardcopy teaching material.
also after experiencing the shut down of dc++, the internet speed had gone better by a little. so i believe that the students in this university would have more advantage should the dc++ is made functional again.

pelajor memerlukang dc++ utk memudahkang pencarian file2 serta utilities yg rare serta bersaiz besor. lebih2 lagi rujukan soalan dan nota2 sem lepas yg tidak terdapat pada elearning. jika tidak, pelajar haruslah menjaja di mirc bertanya kepada umum empunya file2 yg dicari. jalan alternatif lain adalah menggunakan mirc, akan tetapi tidak relevan memandangkan itms telah memblock sambungan antara kolej kediaman serta melarang penggunaan mirc itu sendiri. lu pikir la sendiri.
why do we need dc++??
short and simple answer.
it is a portal for student to share file.especially past year paper during the study week.
not saying there is no other file sharing such as music,video, game etc. but that is just the minor part of the dc++ social service.
and with the closing down of the dc++.
i don’t see any much different with the internet connection.

better put up again the dc++ where if the student can’t find source through the internet, they can open dc++ and get it from the person who share the source and download it happily ever after.

DC++ helps us in study. As many have mentioned, you can download past exam papers and lecture notes from others. Imagine, if a lecturer leaves his/her note on the dekstop PC, you can’t expect 100 students to come up front and copy it into his/her own pendrive, right?
Secondly, you can share softwares like AutoCad, aaSidra, Adobe Photoshop and others through DC++. We need these softwares for our studies and campus activities. Sure, they’re illegal. But you can’t expect students to buy an original CD (say RM200) for each software, right? At the end of the day, we will still download them from the internet.
Thirdly, entertainment. Songs, TV Series, Movies. Again yes, they might be illegal. But isn’t it worse when each student download the files from the internet? It will be haywire. Schutzstaffel gave a very good analogy on this subject.
Conclusion? I can definitely assure you, DC++ has helped me to perform in my studies. It sound cliche, but it’s not just a lame excuse. I do hope that ITMS will listen to our pleas. Thank you
Reason 1: Acts as promotion and announcement tool
Eventhough DC++ is considered as an illegal sharing portal, it really has many other useful functions for v5 residents such as a medium where important announcements and promotions can be made. For example, the v5 raya dinner which was held on 11th October 2009. The number of target audience is 200 people. Unfortunately, the organizers only managed to get 120 people due to lack of promotion. If DC++ was on, the target could have been reached and the dinner would be merrier and exciting without empty seats. Furthermore, announcement of lost items, alert of triggered car alarms or car owner forget to switch off front light and many other announcements can also be made via DC++.
Reason 2: Observation by Operators of DC++
It is agreed that there were porns shared in DC++ but there were also operators and administrator of DC++ who would take turn to monitor the sharing files and those who share porn will be banned from the portal. In other words, the activities of students are observed.
Reason 3: Updates on PC and software
Since every student in V5 have PCs and laptops, updates are very important such as updates on spyware, antivirus, windows, and other software. Furthermore, DC++ can be a platform to discuss and share opinions on the software related. There are also students who are new with computers and they need opinions, suggestions and explanations from expert users. Therefore, DC++ is the portal they can turn too.
DC++ is essential to students because it provides a medium for students to share information with each other. With a single click, students can access files belong to each other. This becomes important during examinations period, where students will need to get lecture notes, past exams paper etc. Academically, this is a good thing. Especially in times like this semester where students do not have study week. Can you find UTP past year exam papers, lecture notes, lab reports etc on the internet?I dont think so.
For piracy/ cyber law issues, please don’t blame DC++. DC++ is just a sharing tools. Students do not copy and distribute pirated movies or songs and sell it to the public. We are talking about a global issue here- piracy. Will closing DC++ solve the piracy problem?No. Students can just download the movies/songs from the internet.Do we need to shut down the internet connection in the world just to solve piracy problem? Hell no. So, why use these lame excuses to close DC++?
Pornograpic contents issue- We have the moderators to control this problem. So far, they are doing a very great job.
Shutting down DC++ will not solve the slow internet connection, as far as I am concerned. With the DC++ shut down, every student will log on to the internet, and this cause traffic issues, hence the very slow internet connection. With DC++, student will just download entertainment/academic contents from it. It will not disrupt the internet connection and hence, faster internet speed.
If any of the management staff blame DC++ for the decline of academic results of students, please… everyone knew that UTP students having dean list achievement is increasing every year. Do not blame DC++ on this matter, blame the students themselves for not studying.
Please bring DC++ back ITMS.

salam. trust me that dc++ was really2 importnt. when i was in my internship period, i feel that having the dc++ was really helpful. that was not because i am desperate to watch lots of movies but it is because the software that i needed and i can get easily from dc++. i know we might also get the software from the internet but because due to the time limits, i feel that having the dc++ was really helpful. You just click search and all relevant software will appear. i know that some software we need to pay in order to use that, but trust me, some company also use the pirated software especially when the software do not use for commercial purpose. lastly, please someone fight for us! thanks.
Having Dc is far better than making the internet not filtered. Dc is free from porno, where in the other hand students will look for porno sites on the internet. The non existing of the Dc make the student work more harder and wasting more time finding entertainment. So Dc not just prevent porno but it also save thousand of students from wasting time finding entertainment.

this is the perfect example of our spoon feed education system. I mean if all the source is here,then probably the student will made less effort to go to the library,and to search for good books,since all information is here. DC doesn’t give us the bad things, we need DC to get news, movies, music to relax, everybody know that the connection in UTP is too slow , we cannot do anything , even we cannot connect to YM , Gtalk also, if we lose DC, we cannot study hard before we got it, DC is not influence about their studying. All of things are up to each students, If they study hard, they can get DEAN LIST each semester easily, if they dont want to study, so if they don’t have DC, they cannot study better than before… Nothing can prove that DC make us study worst…. But I can prove that, DC can make our lives better, we can share anything we want, and we can receive anything we need (not xxx movies)…
So, the decision that DC cannot be continue is wrong… That’s all my opinion … and I think all students in UTP can agree with me…

to make it simple:
dc++ is a portal for sharing.
by sharing files among each other, materials can be obtained easily and quickly.
without dc++, materials have to be loaded from the internet.
loading journals from the internet (without dc++ and with dc++) has been slow and most times, unsuccessful.
- this is just an example.
imagine how many materials a student need. imagine how many materials a whole campus with 6 villages need.
when there is an easier way, of course we opt for it. and dc++ provides that.
it’s a plus, yes, having able to get entertainment sources from it, by the core point of the existence of dc++, is to share. and sharing knowledge from it is way easier than finding our own.

DC is a really important thing for both local and international students, as for example during the holidays when no one is around except for few (mostly international) students, they can access DC and not get bored by the empty campus. also DC is the very most helpful place for us to download the required materials such as programming, media, internet, and other things. there are a lot of engineering programming software that all of us need to work with, which are different each semester, and since they make the PC slow ,we install and uninstall them according to the requirements of each semester.
Regarding the fact that DC is for entertainment, it is true. there may be movies, series, etc in DC, but we are not kids anymore, we can decide when is the time to study and when is the time to rest. As for those students who do not have a good result, I am very sure that closing DC will not change anything about them, since studying is a responsibility for every student, for those who understand this responsibility, they know very well when to study and how to study, and this fact will not change by having DC since they know how to manage their time for both studying and entertainment. And also living in UTP, we are far from the city, not all of us have access to transportation to go outside the campus regularly. so, we need to have some entertainment to change our mood, maybe during weekends or holidays.
Regarding internet, I used to hear that DC was closed because it made the internet slow, but after the DC was closed internet became even slower due to the fact that there are hackers in each block and it has nothing to do with the DC.
we really appreciate if there will be a rethinking in this matter and we are eagerly looking for some kindness from the management to reopen the DC.

we are living in a campus which is located in the middle of no where , getting to nearest city taking 45 min at least ! and as we all know entertainmet facilities here is not good . DC was an easy and unexpensive way to have some fun now and then .Having fun is a part of a students life , we need some time for urselves to take our minds off studying and DC was the soultion.
Also DC is a great way for us to keep in touch with our classmates and group partners by sharing lecturenotes and reading material , sometimes it is even better than elearing to update utpians about important announcments .
Regarding students with poor academic results , we can not blame DC . we better seek the reason in lecture rooms , type of assignment and projects , unsupevised subjects , indiviual abilities and etc , I am pretty sure after shutting down the DC we still face the same problem of students with poor results , and next time they may blame internet , TVs in common rooms or sport facilities !!! should we really listen to all these excuses???
dc++ is the medium where student can get the lecture note and all staffs about academic. From DC, i can get all pass year final paper. But, when there is no DC, difficult to us to get all these staffs because some lecturers did not put their lecture note in elearning.
don’t talk about legal software…seriously, do some math about how much it will cost to have even one legal software…and of course…it never have been one software for all courses…

1) MYTH: DC++ degrades student’s academic performance.
FACT: I am a first class student with CGPA of 3.86 and DC++ does not affect my performance academically. When DC++ is not around, getting things done are just taking more time and more troublesome (sharing notes, software, conference meeting are no longer possible). We, students, need to communicate to each other because communicating does not only translate to entertainment, but also sharing data and multimedia, which are already being part of our life as engineering and technology students in a university whose slogan is “engineering futures”.
2) MYTH: DC++ degrades the speed of UTP internet connection.
FACT: In fact, with or without DC++, the internet connection still sucks. So don’t blame DC++ for that.
3) MYTH: DC++ provides porn.
FACT: This is a big NO NO!!! The operator of DC++ strictly bans user from sharing porn material. I salute them for doing a great job regarding this.
4) MYTH: DC++ encourages misuse of copyrighted material.
FACT: A number of software that UTP has is outdated. Let me give you an example, MATLAB R2009b is the latest MATLAB software that has a parallel processing toolbox feature. Older version of MATLAB does not support this capability. To have UTP purchase every single version of software that students need is impossible especially with UTP management bureaucracy that might take months to grant such things. And also, purchase of software is rather expensive for only the purpose of software trial. In this case, DC++ really helps me to get the software that I need and decides whether the software is worth buying / using.
5) CONCLUSION OF MYTH: DC++ is bad for students…

Reasons for terminating DC++
1. Slows down connection: Come on… even after the DC++ had been abolished, I could say that there are less to no improvement (apart from the filter removal.. even that possess more threat compared to benefit). There are no differences, so why does DC took the blame? I admit I’m noob in this internet…thing, but I want result (which is internet speed), not explaination. Do that, or leave it!
2. Results going down: A lot of my friends obtain very bad result, some even got terminated from petronas sponsor. But, none of them, I repeat, NONE, ever blame DC for their ‘outstanding’ results. Mostly blame themselves for sleeping a lot, go to Ipoh like…everyday, involvements in events etc. etc. So, DC took the blame, again, for no reasons….
3. Piracy: We are students. Most of us are partially or fully independant of PaMa (Papa n Mama) sponsorship. With just RM 500 allowance monthly, don’t expect us to purchase EVERY original product in the market. I know it is wrong ethically, but what choice do we have? With the demand of well-roundedness from the sponsor, we have to master every possible skills there is. And to do that, we need to study every engineering/marketing/design/programming/office/etc software available. To get the original one is basically…impossible…
4. Porn: All I could say that all the DC admins are doing their best to stop this. I have never, ever found a pornographic material since I started using DC++…specifically in V5. Compared to mIRC, the file sharing is a lot more controllable. I don’t see any problem with that.
So, don’t blame DC for all the things it doesn’t do. Closing down DC will change nothing. And… we pay for the internet (well…the sponsor did, and we have to pay them back later on, right??). Customer is always right, is it??
okay i’ve been here for almost 5yrs, and God knows how hard it is to live in this remote area! And what sucks the most is that i hv to complain about this “internet thingy” over and over again, it’s like this place or whoever sits up there is trying to make my life a living hell! [not to mention other silly incidents like no water in the hostel for 3 days (i mean, seriously, how do u expect us to live with tht!) well, just leave other things behind for now] and now i’ve been faced with this situation where THE ONLY thing that keeps my sanity, DC++, is gone forever! omigod! save me!
dcpp is a need for me as a student, not only for entertainment purpose as I’m not much into watching movies from a tiny screen.
Lecture notes are gotten from dcpp, so do senior’s lab reports so that we could refer to them. And the most important thing is to download software, last year when we learned autocad, matlab, the lecturer never gave us the software and we were being independent to find the software by our own self.
Thank Allah at that time we still have dcpp. With internet connection restricted us to download software at that time (and even if we were not restricted pun it was too slow that it sometimes got stucked) how can us have the software needed for learning purpose if not from dcpp.
If porn being an issue, i personally think it’s not a big deal. If someone really wants to own porn, without dcpp he could still get them from various sources. And from my experiences, I’ve never seen any porn shared in dcpp. The administrator have done a great job in making dcpp a free-porn portal. (should i call it portal?)
Please make dcpp available again.. You’re taking one facility for UTP students by taking dcpp from us.

I miss the time every weekend, after a whole hard-studying week, go to DC and download a new movie, songs update,…and then have a relaxing Friday night.

DC++ is a gateway for us to search any material not just only focus on entertainment but also academic stuff….that’s the only way we got that kind of things….Haram jadah if we depended on internet access only…coz as we know as well UTP internet connection always down…and I’m also agree with some other frenz said that it’s really hard to find lecture notes or maybe past year exam paper in elearning coz some lecture you know didn’t put their lecture note n other stuff related in elearning..
They management should hear our voices…..coz we are part of family that contribute for UTP success and achievements…..Dc++ is one of that achievement that we bring to UTP…is some kinda of new technology man!!….without us..who they are!!!

UTP has committed a huge mistake of closing DC++. The centre of Knowledge Sharing, Creativeness, Innovative, are mostly share in DC. Software, Videos are always available in DC. Student rely on DC to spare sometime for personal relaxation.
